A 19th century castle in Ireland used to shoot exterior scenes during the HBO series third season just sold for less than a million dollars.

On Monday, Ireland-based announced Gosford Castle, a sprawling 15-bedroom estate in Markethill, Northern Ireland has been bought after several months on the market.

The castle, which also includes ten bathrooms, was listed last summer for 500,000 pounds or $656,000.

Maison real estate agent Jeremy Baird confirmed that castle was used for exterior scenes throughout the third season of HBO’s hit series ‘Game of Thrones.’

“The scene of the execution of Rickard Karstark, who is beheaded by Robb Stark in the episode “Kissed by Fire,” also took place here,” Baird said.

The Gosford Castle was originally built for The 2nd Earl of Gosford and was designed by London architect Thomas Hopper. During the Second World War, the castle was used to accommodate troops and prisoners of war.

However, the estate was later purchased by the Ministry of Agriculture to create a Gosford Forest Park. Years later it fell back into military use before being run as a hotel from 1983.

Then in 2006, the castle was bought by Gosford Castle Development Limited group, who put forward a $5 million proposal to restore the building into 23 luxury residences.

According to Maison, the restoration was “undertaken by artisans and craftsmen with a focus on retaining the character and historic integrity of the castle.”

However, the portion of the castle that was sold has only been partially developed in places and converted into six luxury apartments.

Maison did not immediately comment on how much the castle was sold for.

Game of Thrones season 8 , episode one

Outside, a giant Iron Throne sat in the spot more often occupied by Rockefeller Plaza’s iconic Christmas tree, while inside the auditorium, attendees were warned by the actress Sophie Turner of the penalties of recording, taking pictures or leaking plot spoilers of this, the premiere of the first episode of the final season.

“Remember what happened to the last person that f—– with us,” chimed in the voice of her co-star Maisie Williams, aka the trained assassin, Arya Stark.

After seven seasons, 67 episodes and 47 Emmy awards – a record for any scripted show in television history (it also holds the record for the most expensive pilot episode ever , filmed at Doune Castle ) – the wildly popular, critically acclaimed epic fantasy Game of Thrones, is finally bidding farewell.

And its creators David Bennioff and DB Weiss have wasted no time in getting straight down to business, with a season premiere packed with big plot point moments.

Directed by GoT regular David Nutter, the episode, as yet officially unnamed, is heavy focussed around reunions – many of them familial and long-awaited, between fond siblings (“all Arya has really thought about for a long time is reuniting with Jon Snow again”, said Williams on the red carpet) – others less so; the most unsuited of former wives and husbands are also flung together again, along with a would-be murderer and his seriously damaged would-be victim.

The show is based on the series of books A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin.“The allegory that I don’t think even George realised he was writing until recently was that, for seven seasons, you’ve got people vying for power, and suddenly, they have to come together and collaborate in order to save the planet,” said Jerome Flynn, who plays the sarcastic sellsword Bronn.

“I think that’s coming from somewhere deep in his subconscious – that the most popular show on the planet contains that metaphor.”

Unlike some season openers in years gone by, this eighth premierecontains no epic battles or large-scale set pieces, but what violence there is, is dark, brutal and unsettling. That’s balanced out, however, by a noticeably lighter, more humorous tone, with plenty of witty one-liners.

Collaboration is also a key theme. In previous seasons, the competing houses were spread out across Westeros, waging wars on one another in a bid to expand their empires.  As season seven set up, however, many of Westeros’ key players are now heading north – to fight together against the White Walkers, who are advancing on the kingdom in colossal numbers.

Danaerys Targaryan (Emilia Clarke) soon learns what the audience already knows from last season too – that the wall has been ruptured, and one of her dragons killed and conscripted into the army of the dead by the Night King.

Doune is one of the best preserved medieval castles in Scotland.

The Great Hall is 20 metres by 8 metres , and 12 metres high to its timber roof, again a 19th-century replacement. The hall has no fireplace, and was presumably heated by a central fire, and ventilated by means of a louvre like the one in the modern roof. No details of the original roof construction are known, however, and the restoration is conjectural.Large windows light the hall, and stairs lead down to the three cellars on ground level.

The hall is accessed from the courtyard via a stair up to a triangular lobby, which in turn links the hall and kitchens by means of two large serving hatches with elliptical arches, unusual for this period. The kitchen tower, virtually a tower house in its own right, is 17 metres (56 ft) by 8 metres (26 ft). The vaulted kitchen is on the hall level, above a cellar. One of the best-appointed castle kitchens in Scotland of its date, it has an oven and a 5.5-metre (18 ft) wide fireplace. A stair turret, added in 1581 and possibly replacing a timber stair, leads up from the lobby to two storeys of guest rooms. These include the “Royal Apartments”, a suite of two bedrooms plus an audience chamber, suitable for royal visitors.

Doune Castle has featured in several literary works, including the 17th-century ballad, “The Bonny Earl of Murray”, which relates the murder of James Stewart, 2nd Earl of Moray, by the Earl of Huntly, in 1592. In Sir Walter Scott’s first novel, Waverley (1814), the protagonist Edward Waverley is brought to Doune Castle by the Jacobites. Scott’s romantic novel describes the “gloomy yet picturesque structure”, with its “half-ruined turrets”.

The castle was used as a location in MGM’s 1952 historical film Ivanhoe which featured Robert Taylor and Elizabeth Taylor. The BBC adaptation of “Ivanhoe” in 1996 also featured Doune as a location. The castle was used as the set for Winterfell in the TV series Game of Thrones (2011–present), an adaptation of the A Song of Ice and Fire series of novels by George R. R. Martin. The castle was used as a stand-in for the fictional “Leoch Castle” in the TV adaption of the Outlander series of novels.
